Chapter one

The Arrival

The Quantock Hills are some extraordinary landmarks in deep, rural Somerset. These hills are explored by many people, hoping to explore everything that they have to offer.

One day, a group of wildlife lovers arrived, hoping to see some wild deer.

“Come on,” shouted the leader. “One by one.”

After everyone, except Fat Jim, stepped off the Ridlers coach, they lay down at a Holly and an Ivy tree (their camp) and took in the fresh air.

They saw some wild horses, on the grassland, which were shiny and beautiful with glistening, brown eyes; but the horses charged at everyone! Luckily, the beasts became bored and stomped away. With scabs and cuts all over, the group opened their lunchboxes and went back to camp again to get some First Aid.
Chapter two

The Arrival

George, one of the organisers, was minding his own business until his map blew away blowing towards Lady's Combe. Angry and distracted, tired but powerful, he stormed through the forest trying to find his directions.

What he or his friends didn't know was that there was a mysterious monster, which lived in Dead Woman's Ditch. Who ate tourists between 12:00 and 1:00pm because lots of people were on the hills at lunchtime and he could easily have his dinner!

George dashed back to the Holly and the Ivy tree with his legs in complete agony and out of breath. But he noticed that his friends had gone. He thought that they had ignored him; he felt like he was a black dot that no one cared about. So, he journeyed into Lady's Combe to find them. He looked ready to go (but in his soul, he just wanted to go home).
Cross the road and look for a wooden marker post

Chapter three

Scary Creatures

George crept through the murky, gloomy forest, hoping to see his friends doing everything without him. At that moment, he was feeling extremely angry and left out.

Just then, he tripped over an oak log and couldn't get up because it had trapped his leg! Luckily a friendly Hob, who had a very long nose, helped him up. Hobs were loving creatures who were very nice to humans. George, however, was terrified.

“Who are you?” asked George, with a tingle going up his spine.

The Hob comforted him, saying, “Please, don't be scared.”

“Get away from me!” screamed George, getting ready to run away.
Chapter four

Scary Creatures

George tried to run but a sneaky Svart, a dark elf who hated humans, was up in a tree shooting his bow and arrow at him. The arrows were piercing through his old, worn out skin and one even went through his leg! He felt like a window that had been smashed to bits. George was in complete agony, so he hid behind an ancient, knobbly oak tree to get time to use his first aid kit. Once the Svart had stopped killing him, George carefully crept from the giant oak tree and then he ever so slowly limped down the hill.

But then, he felt a thump behind him. He fell over. Colossal and annoyed, disturbed but thoughtful, the oak tree he was hiding behind had just become an Ent. Ents came in all types and sizes; the most common was an oak. They were basically trees that were alive! George noticed that loads of trees were starting to grow eyes and the roots were coming out of the ground. There was a whole army of Ents crowding around him! Just then, he sprinted off, hoping to get out of there. He ran until his legs caught fire (not actually). The creatures chased after him, but George felt a sudden burst of energy and he dashed away. However, this was only the start of his terror.
Go slightly right and downhill. Look out for slippery ditches! A walking stick might help.

Chapter five

Keep Calm and Carry On

After George stormed past the terrifying Ents, Svarts and Hobs, he was being extra cautious around the forest because he thought there might be more of them out there. George had only been in Lady's Combe for twelve hours and he was already starting to get hypothermia.

At that moment, he felt a slight sucking feeling which he felt in his feet; this made him go upside down! George started getting closer to a ‘Helter Skelta Tree'. It was used by the Lios Alfar (light elves) who loved to play there. He felt like he was a crumb being sucked up by a hoover. Then he started to shrink, really fast; and eventually, he was zooming down the ‘Helter Skelta Tree' and he found himself sitting opposite an Elf.
Chapter six

Keep Calm and Carry On

Looking around the little dwelling, George asked, “Who are you?”

“I am going to be your guide,” confirmed the Elf, staring at George.

With a look of shock on his face, George thought, “Why?”

“From what I've seen, I think you should make friends with one of us,” exclaimed the Elf, with his hands on his hips.

Standing up, George shouted, “But how?” Before he could ask more questions, the Elf catapulted George out of the highest branch of the oak tree and on to the ground. It was the Elf's way of saying ‘Good luck and goodbye'. However, George felt a bit angry and shocked that he would do that.

“A friend?” thought George, with his hand on his head. “I suppose.” Then he carried on.
Follow the path down the hill.

Chapter seven

A New Friend

As George was strolling past some Oak and Birch trees, he was still thinking about what the Elf said.

“How am I supposed to make a friend in this place?” thought George, throwing his arms in the air. Then suddenly, he heard a terrible…ROAR! It made the blood inside his body stop! George fainted.

Then there was a…THUMP! The THUMP was the Mysterious Monster of Lady's Combe and Dead Woman's Ditch. The Monster ate humans to their bones; they would be gone in one millisecond! George had read books about sightings of this monster; he had said to his friends to watch out for him, but they didn't listen.
Chapter eight

A New Friend

The Monster had noticed he had nearly given George a heart attack. So, he used his magical powers to bring him back up again. The monster could be terrible and frightening (but George hadn't harmed him and the monster sometimes cared about humans).

“Thank you!” exclaimed George, wiping mud off his clothes “Who was roaring?”

“I'm sorry,” sighed the Mysterious Monster, looking down at the ground. “It was me.”

“That's fine,” smiled George, with his hands by his sides. “Do you want to be my friend?”

“Yes please!” shouted the Mysterious monster, jumping up and down. From then on, he had a best friend who cared about him. George felt happy and alive (but he was still being careful because he had heard terrible stories about this creature). Can he trust him?
Keep going downhill. Look out for birch trees on the right. They have silvery bark with sideways cracks in them.

Chapter nine

Well Done!

You are doing really well! But, you will have to walk a bit further for the last chapter.

Carry on and good luck!
Back on the path, keep going downhill. Look out for some Holly trees.

Chapter ten

Goodbye

1 year later, George became ‘George the Quantock Beast'! Smelly and dirty, hairy and ragged, he looked like a Goblin with torn up clothes. Also, George and the Mysterious Monster were still best friends, but now played around a female Holly tree (they knew it was female because it had winter berries). The best thing was that there wasn't anyone to distract them. But not for long.

One day, they were talking about the freezing winter and how to survive it. Then suddenly, the sound of a terrible quad bike roared through the whole of Lady's Combe.
Chapter eleven

Goodbye

On the vehicle, sat a strong, angry woodcutter, ready with his chainsaw. He got off the shiny quad bike and switched on his foul device (which was as loud as thunder). The sharp chainsaw tore through the unfortunate Holly tree. It was going to hit the monster! What will George do? He thought he was a scary monster (but George was still his friend). So, George stood in the way and the Holly tree fell on him. George had saved the monster.

The monster checked to see if George was fine, however, he wasn't. The Holly thorns had torn through his worn out body. He was dead. The monster cried and cried.
He made a memorial for him at Dead Woman's Ditch, which was now more like ‘Dead Man's Ditch'. After he did that, he walked over the grassland. He had no home or family to go to. 12 days later he was so depressed, he died too.

THE END.
This is the end. Thank you for doing this storywalk! Feel free to explore the other children's storywalks. Goodbye.
