The Fifth Marvellous Map of Mathematical Mystery

If you are holding the iPad please read this aloud to your group.

Dear Marvellous Magical Mathemagicians, May Many Months of Merriment be ours if we complete this task today!

We must work as a team to make our way through the Marvellous Map Of Mathematical Mystery.

We will need to read clearly to each other, so that we all understand the puzzles.
We will need to work together to solve the puzzles.
We will need to record our answers neatly
But most of all...
We must read the instructions carefully, so that we understand them!

Now we must do nothing until Mr. Wedderkopp gives us our next instructions.

Quietly change your seating positions so that you are in age order.
Put your hands face down on the table.
Say, all at the same time, "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BOOM!"

Did you follow these instructions properly?

Chapter one

Instructions and Behaviour Expectations.

A map should have revealed itself on your screen. Take a moment as a group to look it over and understand it.

Send the second oldest person in your group to collect a map from Sandra.

Check that the maps are the same. If they are different, go back to Sandra and collect the correct map.

Your mission is to solve a series of problems and riddles. These will be revealed as you move around the Marvellous Map Of Mathematical Mystery.

Send the youngest member of your group to collect a decoder grid from Mrs. James.

When you have solved a puzzle you can use the decoder grid to collect a letter. Every correct answer can be found on the grid, and each of these answers is paired with a letter. For example an answer of 17 gives you the letter J. An answer of "circle" gives you the letter Z.

Take a moment as a group to look over the decoder grid and understand how it works.

The oldest person in your group should go to Mr.Wedderkopp for an answer sheet.

Once you have solved all ten puzzles you should have enough letters to form a ten letter Magical Mystery Word!

Whoever is holding the iPad should now pass it to someone else in the group and go to Sandra to collect a clipboard, blank A4 and a pencil.

Write your names on the top sheet of A4 and on your answer sheet.

If you wish to successfully complete this Marvellous Map Of Mathematical Mystery you will need to work as a team. Please rotate the iPad around the group, along with the decoder grid, map, and the notepad and pencil, so that each of you has a chance to use them all. Please move sensibly around the school grounds, stick together, and do not move out of sight of the adults. If in doubt - come back!

Now, if you're ready, as a team shout, "GERONIMO !!!!"

Please find Mrs. Norman and explain why you will be moving sensibly around the school grounds during this activity. She will give you further instructions.

Chapter two

READY, STEADY, GO!!!!

Go to the origin to find your first challenge.

HINT: The origin is the beginning of everything - the place where the x axis and y axis meet.

Chapter three

(0,0) Money

Usually one tyre for the front of a tractor costs £100 and one tyre for the back costs £250. This week there is a 20% off sale.

How much would it cost this week to buy all the tyres for a tractor?

Now, go to (2,1)

Chapter four

(2,1) Equivalent Fractions

Add these fractions and then put your answer in its simplest terms.

3 eighths plus 2 sixths

Now, go to (1,-1)

HINT: Remember that to add and subtract fractions you must have common denominators (both fractions must have the same number on the bottom).
48ths may be useful!
Chapter five

Chapter six

(1,-1) Angles

Look at the diagram. Work out angle A.

Now, go to (-1,2).

HINT: How many degrees in a circle?

Chapter seven

(-1,2) Percentages

My new hot air balloon originally cost £800, but because it had a family of wallabies nesting in the basket I convinced the sellers to give me 32% off. After the discount I traded in my old balloon for another £50 off. How much did I end up paying for the new balloon?

As a group, count to 20 as loudly and as quickly as you can!

Now, go to (2,-1)

Chapter eight

(2,-1) Number

What is the greatest common factor of 18, 12 and 30?

Now, go to (1,1) and ignore the instructions there to sing!

HINT: The diagram may help you to understand the concept of common factors. What numbers go into all three of the target numbers?
Chapter nine

Chapter ten

(1,1) Word Problem

Ashley has 5 sheep and Ben has 6 sheep. Three of Ashley's sheep have wooden legs, whilst Ben's sheep are all purple (except for one of them, which is mauve). At shearing time Ashley's fleeces sell for £2.45 each. Ben's purple fleeces sell for £1.55 and the mauve one earns him £2.80. What is the difference in the money the two farmers earn?

Once you've found your letter on the decoder grid, sing and act out this lovely rhyme:

"I'm a little teapot short and stout,
here's my handle,
here's my spout.
When I get all steamed up
hear me shout.
Pick me up
and pour me out!"

Now, go to (-1,0)

Chapter eleven

(-1,0) Shape & Space

What is the area of this circle?

Each of you find an adult and recite Pi to as many places as you can remember!

Now, go to (0,1)

Hint: take Pi as 3

Chapter twelve

(0,1) Data Handling

In an archery contest Charlie scored 7, Mike scored 3, Abu scored 8, Jose scored 3, Sarah scored 7 and Sam scored 2.

What was the mean score?

Hint:
Median is the middle value
Mode is the most common value
Mean is the sum of all the values, divided by how many values there are

Before you read on please carefully put down your equipment and do 20 excellent star jumps!

Good, now, go to (2,0)
Chapter thirteen

Chapter fourteen

(2,0) Square and Cube Numbers

What is 8 squared subtract 3 cubed?

Now, go slightly south of (0,1)

Chapter fifteen

(0,1) Shape & Space

Look at your map.

Find the origin, (0,1) and (1,1).

You don't win a letter here...

... instead, go to the co-ordinate that would make these points into a square.

Chapter sixteen

(1,0) The Last Puzzle

Well done – you've made it to the end of the Marvellous Map Of Mathematical Mystery!

To get your last letter, multiply together the two digits that make up the co-ordinates of this spot.

If you have solved all of the puzzles you should have ten letters.

Check with Mr.W that you have the correct letters.

Can you re-arrange the letters to find a mystery animal?

Once you think you've found the answer, tell Sandra. You only have one chance, so take care!
Chapter seventeen
